Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Glarus, Jura – 28 July

The cantons of Basel-Stadt and Jura present themselves together in Vevey under the theme “Carnival and more”.

The aim is to showcase the rich Carnival tradition of the two cantons on this occasion, but also more broadly to showcase their living culture, their terroirs and some of their particularities.

The joint presence of the two cantons is no coincidence: Basel-Stadt and the Jura are united by close ties, a deep friendship and a genuine tradition of inter-cantonal collaboration, and have done so for a long time. The presence of the two cantons of Basel-Stadt and Jura includes a procession, rich and fresh programming on the stages, tastings and the sale of cantonal specialities as well as a more specific offer for families and children.

The shared tradition of Carnival is the common thread of this presence. An exhibition at the Jardin Doret will remind us that in 2017 the Basel Carnival was integrated by UNESCO into the list of the intangible heritage of humanity – one year after the Fête des Vignerons. The Jura Carnival, for its part, has also been included in the living traditions of the Confederation since that same year, 2017.

The Carnival tradition will be at the centre of the large procession, which will include, on the Basel side, a clique of ladies, traditional fife and drums, etc.

For its part, the Jura will present an original creation revisiting the traditions and codes of the Jura Carnival. The emblematic group of “Sauvages”, which does not normally leave the cantonal territory, will also be on the Jura side.

Basel-Stadt will present a rich diversity, from “Klaumauk” – an impressive machine-sculpture by the famous artist Jean Tinguely – to street dance. The Basel wine brotherhoods and vinicultural societies will also march in the procession.

Of course, Basel-Stadt and the Jura cannot attend the Fête des Vignerons without showcasing their own wines. These will be offered for tasting and sale in a common area under the aegis of the Swiss Wine Promotion umbrella association near the festival arena. The “JUBA-Bar” which will be set up on the Quai Perdonnet will allow other regional specialities to be presented, whether it be regional beers, the tête de moine cheese or even damassine eau de vie.

Numerous talented groups of musicians and artists from both cantons will occupy the various stages of the event during the cantonal day. They will provide entertainment but will also give you the opportunity to discover other aspects of Basel-Stadt and the Jura.

The canton of Basel-Landschaft will unveil a fire show from Liestal, the canton’s capital. Some 80 burning broomsticks, made of fir and pine wood, and tanks filled with burning wood will make Vevey shine with a thousand lights and will certainly be a highlight. The “Parade of Fire” will start at 10pm on Quai Maria-Belgia
